Veterans Repertory Theater (VetRep) announces its 2023 staged reading series at its popular 16-seat Parlor in Cornwall, NY. VetRep’s Parlor exists to bring professional theater to Orange County for low cost and accessible performances. Located at VetRep’s administrative offices in an 1890’s-era house at 16 Quaker Avenue in Cornwall. VetRep uses the Parlor to select and assess actors for its veteran-authored plays currently in development.
VetRep’s 2023 Staged Reading Series starts in April when Padraic Lillis (The Farm
Theater, Labyrinth Theater Company) will direct David Mamet’s cutting satire of
Hollywood Speed-the-Plow (April 1, 8, 22, 29). May sees Jenn Haltman (Mile Square
Theater, New York Theater Workshop, Joe’s Pub) direct Joshua Harmon’s biting
comedy about family and faith Bad Jews (May 6, 13, 20, 27). In June, VetRep Artistic
Director Christopher Paul Meyer returns to directing with Woody Allen’s wildly comic
Central Park West (June 3, 10, 17, 24). July features the veteran-authored 10-minute
play reading festival Death Before Dress Rehearsal (July 8, 15, 22, 29). In the fall
Meyer will direct Yasmina Reza’s sharp-edged comedy God of Carnage (September 9,
16, 23, 30), Joe Orton’s 1960s sex farce What the Butler Saw (October 7, 14, 21, 28),
and Michael Frayn’s legendary farce Chinamen (November 11, 18, December 2, 9).
The season is VetRep’s second and will be notable for the premiere of Death Before
Dress Rehearsal, a 10-minute play reading festival featuring veteran-authored plays.
The festival will feature Denis Meadows’ poignantly thrilling A Brush Against The
Indifference Of The Universe, Arianna Rose’s clever Sex, Lies & Stryofoam, Richard
Fouts’ madcap comedy Fast-Moving Consumer Goods, Jack Rushton’s provocative
George’s Radio, Terry Glaser’s Greek myth-turned-film noir The Big Dark, Donald A.
Ranard’s thoughtful Elbow.Apple.Carpet.Saddle.Bubble, and VetRep Artist-in-
Residence Daniel Guyton’s absurdist Service For None.
Meyer stated that, “We’ve wanted to feature more veteran writing at the Parlor, so
audiences don’t have to wait for our full-length productions to see it. Death Before Dress
Rehearsal is a great opportunity for us to showcase the wide range of genres and
subject matter veterans (including immediate family members) in the theater are
writing.”
With directors Haltman, Lillis, and VetRep acting standout Davis Cowart taking over
directing several productions from Meyer, Meyer himself will act in several productions
throughout the season for the first time in almost 20 years – having taken a hiatus due
to his military career.
Says Meyer, “We’re incredibly grateful and excited to bring such accomplished directors
to play with us at the Parlor this year. We’ve been fortunate in our friends and having
such dedicated folks come up to Cornwall to help us establish a world-class theater is
really a privilege.”
Tickets are priced as “pay-what-you-can” and can be purchased ahead of time at
